Academic

Academic Programs

Brookside Elementary prides itself on its academic programs.  Some programs include:

Curriculum:  Our school's general education curriculum is based on the Common Core State Standards, K-5 in the CORE content areas.  To learn more about the CCSS  click here

 

English Language:Our EL program supports students as they learn English through specialized instruction and materials.  Children move through five levels of proficiency until they are fluent in English and are re-classified. English learners receive concentrated instruction in the use of the English language that is appropriate for their grade and English language proficiency level.  A highly qualified teacher with advanced training in special strategies help students increase their English proficiency and learn academic subjects taught in English provides instruction.

 

Special Needs Services:  Brookside under the direction of, and support from the district is committed to providing eligible students with disabilities a free and appropriate public education consistent with federal and state laws. Special Education support and services are provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004.

 

Speech:A Speech Pathologist provides services to identified students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Services include, evaluation and screening; planning and implementations of services; reporting; and participation in IEP meetings. 

 

Science Fair:Students in grades K-5 participate in a school wide Science Fair, with emphasis on projects for students in grades three, four, and five.  Grade levels and/or individual students use the scientific process to conduct experiments within the classroom and at home. Science experiments displayed and judged for the most original and use of the scientific method. School wide winners are entered at the District Science Fair.

 

Spelling Bee: Students in grades four and five participate in spelling competitions within their own classrooms.  Two spellers from each class participate in a school wide Annual Spelling Bee where parents, community, students and teachers attend the “Bee” and cheer contestants.  The top four student winners prepare and participate in the BUSD Spelling Bee for an opportunity and chance to be recognized as the district’s champion.  Winners move to the county level Spelling Bee. 

 

Educational Management Team (EMT):  This team consisting of parents, teachers, administrators and support staff meet to discuss student learning and achievement, and any factors that might affect the academic, social, emotional growth or physical health of students. It provides an opportunity to identify issues, brainstorm potential solutions and develop a plan to ensure that the identified student achieve his or her learning potential.
